I went to a job fair two weeks ago and was offered a job as a math teacher at Clippert Academy – a middle school in Mexicantown of Southeast Detroit. I have yet to receive a formal offer from DPS so hopefully it will come soon lol. Right now, I’m also interviewing with the EAA until I am able to formally accept an offer from DPS.
Additionally, I will be starting institute in two weeks at Philadelphia which should be very rigorous and a great learning experience. I’ve read a lot of blog entries on institute and I’ve noticed a few commonalities: long days, variable classroom sizes, and a focus on the socioeconomic and racial components of poverty. My hopes, and some of these desires I’ve heard echoed by other corps members, are that my time at institute will also focus on classroom management techniques and student-center learning strategies.
I’ve also been reading a lot of articles on the nature of educational inequity, the different strategies and solutions proposed by different scholars and organizations, and the hotly debated role (positive, negative, or neutral) of Teach For America plays in this discourse. I will probably be including some of my thoughts on these interesting topics later on!
I will try to write another blog entry in the next week or so, thanks for reading!
